CMU Band Presents Winter Concert Composer Tom Kampman to Attend

FAYETTE, Mo. – The Central Methodist University Concert Band will present a winter concert Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Student and Community Center on the Fayette campus. The concert is free and open to the public. More than 70 students play in the Concert Band, which is conducted by Roy “Skip” Vandelicht, CMU’s director of bands and alumnus of the class of 1977. The band will be performing “Overture to Candide” by Bernstein, “Honey Boys on Parade” by Cupero, “Festive Songs of Christmas” by Erickson, “Jefferson Swing Concert March” by Tom Kampman, CMU class of 1954, “Joyance” by Claude T. Smith, also the class of 1954, “Waltz No. 2” by Shostakovich, and Bach’s “Fugue a la Gigue,” arranged by Holst. Kampman (“Jefferson Swing Concert March”) will attend this concert with his wife, Willa, an alumna from the class of 1956. He has been active in music since he graduated with a B.M.E. in voice. He earned his master’s degree from Indiana University and did summer stock in Indianapolis and St. Louis. He sang with Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians and was a member of “The Group” jazz trio. He also sang in clubs and on television, including the Perry Como Show of the 1950s and ’60s. For 10 years he served as music director, arranger and conductor for Carousel Productions in Denver. Claude T. Smith wrote “Joyance” for the 1975 Central Methodist Band in honor of the 50th anniversary of Central’s Swinney Conservatory of Music. The Central band premiered the composition at the MENC Southwest Division Conference in Omaha. Smith died in 1987. This year marks the 101st anniversary of Central bands. Founded in 1854, Central Methodist programs range from undergraduate and graduate studies to high-school dual credit offerings. Serving more than 5,000 students on its historic main campus in Fayette, through collaborative programs at locations across Missouri, and online, the CMU mission emphasizes academic and professional excellence, ethical leadership, and social responsibility.

NEWS BRIEFS Missouri animal shelters awarded grants ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — A state grant has given St. Joseph has a new tool to help stranded animals. The St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue recently bought a mobile emergency animal rescue and sheltering trailer, which can hold up to 48 animals. It was acquired with a grant of about $44,000 from the Missouri Homeland Security Office. The St. Joseph News Press reports that the city plans to use the trailer to respond to disasters across northwest Missouri to provide temporary care for animals in emergencies. In another animal shelter related story, the Associated Press reported that the animal shelter in Independence has been awarded a $20,000 grant from a national animal rescue organization. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Wednesday that Independence's Animal Services won the organization's Midwest regional challenge promoting animal rescues. The ASPCA said the shelter found homes for 964 pets during the challenge period, 400 more than the shelter saved during the same period last year. During the ASPCA challenge, shelters competed to save at least 300 more animals during August, September, and October than they did over that period last year. . The ASPCA says contestants nationwide saved a total of nearly 9,000 more animals compared to the same three-month period in 2010.

Boonville’s INDEECO to close in 2012 By Megan Tilk Reporter

After more than 20 years of service in Boonville, INDEECO has announced the plant will be closing its doors and moving all Boonville operations to Mon-

roe City. INDEECO, the St. Louis-based industrial heater manufacturer with facilities in Boonville and Cuba, Mo., runs a two-shift operation and currently employes 65 people — down from the 85 it had three years ago. In the same statement that announced the closing of the Boonville plant, INDEECO said it will also close its Meadville, Pa., plant and consolidate that operation into the Monroe City location as well. The Cuba, Mo., plant will be unaffected. "The jobs from Boonville will move to Monroe City and and we're hoping the employees will move too," said INDEECO CEO John Eulich. "Several have already expressed interest in commuting and a few have expressed interest in moving." For those commuting, it would mean an hour and 45 minute drive, one way. "This is a tough economy and jobs are hard to find," Eulich said. "We're currently educating our employees on the details of the move and are offering incentives for those who choose to stick with us. We're hoping they choose to make the move." While Eulich failed to provide specific financial details of the company's decision, he said "there are enough cost savings for us to invest the money to expand and retain our people in Monroe City." Eulich added that no production jobs will be cut but that a few "overhead and administrative," positions may be eliminated during the move. So what's the closure mean for Boonville? According to City Administrator Irl Tessendorf, the closure will have a minimal impact on the city's economy. Eulich said many of the 65 employees currently commute to Boonville, which provide little more than some sales tax revenue to the city. Those who are from Boonville could mean a $510,000 decrease in sales tax revenue and a $650 total loss in property tax revenue, according to Tessendorf. Other areas that could see a slight dip would be franchise taxes, such as utilities, real estate tax and water works. Tessendorf stresses that a majority of the employees would have to live within city limits

and actually move to Monroe City for any affect to be noticed. INDEECO's trickle of job cuts through the past few years could mean more of an impact if those employees who were cut chose to leave Boonville, but the slow, steady decrease made revenue changes virtually unnoticeable. "This isn't the first factory to leave since I've been around," Tessendorf said. "It does have some impact but the cycle continues. Their houses are generally filled by someone else and others come in for new jobs." Eulich said that the INDEECO building itself is a leased property and that the owner, Fred Epstein of St. Louis, could choose to lease to another manufacturer. He was unclear as to their current plans however. The current timeline puts the final day of work on Oct. 1, 2012 with several production lines and positions moving to the other facility sooner.

Low-cal pot pies for cold weather By Jim Hillibish GateHouse News Service

Pot pies are among the tastiest of cold weather comfort foods. But low-cal, they are not. Let's face it, anything topped with a layer of pie crust is going to be on the decadent side. But there is a way to trim calories, thanks to a recipe from Chobani Greek Yogurt. Typically, a pot pie's gravy-like filling gets its flavor and texture from heavy cream, sour cream or cream cheese. Those rich ingredients pack a load of fat. By using Greek yogurt instead, you cut calories without sacrificing taste. Chobani yogurt is milk-rich and ultrathick like sour cream, but is completely fat-free. In addition, Greek yogurt has twice the protein than regular yogurt and is a great source of calcium. Find more healthful fall and holiday recipes at www.chobanikitchen.com.

TURKEY POT PIE 1 small onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, chopped 1/2 cup peeled potato, diced 1/4 cup celery, chopped 1/4 cup butter, cubed 13 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed 1/4 teaspoon rubbed sage 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup chicken broth 2 cups cooked turkey, cubed 1/2 cup frozen peas 1 cup Plain Chobani 1 sheet refrigerated pie pastry Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In large saucepan, sauté onion, carrot, potato and celery in butter until tender. Add flour and seasonings until blended; gradually add broth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in turkey, peas and Chobani; divide mixture among four ungreased 5-inch pie plates. (Also consider using disposable foil tins, or even ramekin-style cups). Divide pastry into quarters. On a lightly floured surface, roll each quarter into a 6-inch circle; place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edges; cut slits to vent. Bake potpies for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for a few minutes before serving. Makes 4 servings. If desired, pot pies can be frozen (well-wrapped) for up to 3 months. To cook frozen pot pies, remove from the freezer 30 minutes before baking. Cover edges of crusts loosely with foil. Bake on a baking sheet at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove foil; bake 15-20 minutes longer or until golden brown and filling is bubbly. Redwood Creek wine reflects “Spirit of California”

W

By Bennet & Sheila Bodenstein Syndicated Columnists e are not the type to be word picking but when a winery boasts that “they make wine that captures the spirit of California” and then shows up with an Argentinean wine, the statement must be challenged. The winery is Redwood Creek, and they are the makers of some very nice and affordable wines. When we questioned the winery about the faux pax, they didn’t try to lie their way out of it or cover it up but openly told us that they found a vineyard in Argentina that grew, what they considered to be, malbec outstanding grapes so they sent their winemaker down there to supervise the winemaking. Well, you can't fault them for that. As far as “the spirit of California”, the Redwood Creek wines most certainly do reflect that and do so at affordable prices.

Just for clarification, that “spirit of California” is the producing wines that reflect the true flavor of the grape and take full advantage of the growing conditions in California. Those wines that fall into the “spirit” category, regardless of price, accentuate the fruit, producing what is usually referred to as “jammy” wines. By current definition, a jammy wine accentuates the fruit flavors and aromas. Jammy wines are a signature style for most of the affordable California wines. We stress affordable because grapes for these wines come from the warmer wine grape growing districts while the more expensive wines tend to come from the cooler regions. Redwood Creek 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon ($8.00). Let's start by saying that the Redwood Creek 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is not one of those deep and contemplative wines over which one ponders the questions of the universe, although if you wish to ponder over this wine, have at it. This is a friendly, quaffing wine, with all of the charm and depth of a fine cabernet sauvignon, but with an added great big smile. The aroma of this

wine is heavy with the scent of cherries and black currents, and an unmistakable undertone of cedar. The flavor is very broad and layered, accenting the cherries and black currents found in the aroma but with a noticeable additional berry component. This is a perfect wine for those oversize, sizzling steaks that are a barbecue favorite or with pasta and cheese dishes. Contrary to the usual uses of cabernet sauvignon as an accompaniment to the heavier winter meals, the Redwood Creek 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon can rise to almost any meal situation. Redwood Creek 2009 Pinot Noir ($8.00). Many of the pinot noirs that we have sampled in the below $15 price range have been poor, to say the best for them. The grape variety does not lend itself to less expensive winemaking techniques. The Redwood Creek 2009 Pinot Noir is a delightful exception. It is a wellmade wine that exhibits all of the properties and charms the grape is capable of without any of the off flavors often found in its less expensive cousins. Dark in color and big in flavor, this wine presents an open cherry flavor and aroma coupled with oak and spice. Unlike many of the affordable pinot noir this wine has a rather long and fruit filled finish. This is a very nice wine and a

great introduction to the variety without breaking the bank. Redwood Creek 2009 Malbec ($8.00).Ok, we finally come to the culprit, the Argentinean Malbec. It looks like the Redwood Creek vintners made a good decision when they chose this particular malbec. Made big, bold, and solid by 10 months of aging in oak barrels this wine displays an aroma of cherries, plums, cinnamon, and the hint of a soft red berries which is crowned with a suggestion of spice, oak and vanilla. Cherries, plums, cinnamon, and the hint of coffee are the dominant flavors along with the added complexity and flavor provided by the oak. Judging for the quality and flavor of this wine, we guess that we can forgive the RedwoodCreek vintners for this slight transgression.

Keeping Holiday Spending In Check (StatePoint) The holiday season is in full swing and the stores are But packed. don't let the holiday shopping rush force you to overspend. This year, smart shoppers are taking advantage of free mobile apps so they can establish holiday budgets and keep track of their spending onthe-go. For instance, Mint.com’s mobile applications (available for iPhone, Android and iPad) enable shoppers to establish a holiday budget and stick to it. With charts indicating how much you have left to spend, and email and SMS alerts informing you when you’re nearing your limit, this app helps shoppers hang on to their green this jolly season. So get out there and shop smart.

How To Protect Yourself From Financial Scams

(StatePoint) No matter how much money you have, your financial accounts and investments need protection. According to the FBI, Americans currently lose approximately $40 billion annually to financial investment fraud. Most Americans rely solely on the government and their banks to enforce investor safety, but many experts caution this isn’t enough and that people need to get actively involved in protecting themselves. Even with strengthened financial protection laws in place, the ability for the government to police the scope of undue profiteering and theft is limited. “Rather than being victimized first and seeking recourse later, protect your nest egg now,” says Pat Huddleston, author “The Vigilant Investor: A Former SEC Enforcer

Reveals How to Fraud-Proof Your Investments,” published by AMACOM Books. “Vigilance means acknowledging that anyone is vulnerable to being tricked, regardless of education, intelligence, and experience.” You may think you can spot a scam a mile away, but the best ones don’t look like scams or sound completely trustworthy. Experienced fraudsters typically provide their victims with credible looking proof of returns. Some scams will go so far as to employ fully-staffed phone banks and websites. Every investor should be on the alert for red flags like these, says Huddleston, who is also CEO of Investor’s Watchdog, a group that conducts fraud investigations. • Name-dropping. Scam artists often wield the power of their supposed celebrity clients to impress the gullible. • The takeaway pitch. “Available for a limited time only!” This scammer’s ploy of taking away your opportunity GROUND FORCE BRUSH BEAVER taps into the natural human aversion to loss. • Living extra-large. If Cuts trees up to 10” in diameterin seconds the adviser resists your requests for transparency, take your money and run. • Vague credentials.
