CRIME STOPPERS Columbus police and Crime Stoppers seek the person or persons responsible for a series of church burglaries. A thief or thieves broke into the Second Avenue Baptist Church at 2800 Second Ave. on June 5 and left with an air conditioner and turntable. Since that break-in, 11 other churches throughout Columbus have been burglarized. Police believe all the burglaries are related.

In 10 of the break-ins, the thieves entered through a window. Another entry was through a door. Stereo equipment is sought in most of the break-ins. Other churches hit by burglaries included: Morningside Dukakis may soon get Alabama coordinator By Priscilla Black Duncan Senior Writer By the end of the week, Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis may have a campaign coordinator in Alabama. Greg Hawley, 31, a Birmingham lawyer, said he is slated to meet with the Massachusetts governor in Boston later week.

Hawley said it is Dukakis' policy not to hire any campaign official without a personal interview. The lawyer met with highlevel Dukakis aides during the final days of the Democratic National Convention last week in Atlanta. The Democrat's strength in the South, said Hawley, varies from state to state, depending on where local organizations are cohesive and where leading officials are close to the governor. North Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Arkansas, for example, are strong states, he said. "He's not that well organized in Alabama, and there are no elected officials that close to him," said Hawley, who added that he spent so little time at the convention that he has "no real sense of what the delegates want.

Only what I read in the papers." His own relationship with the candidate is based on meeting with his son, John. "When John Dukakis came to Birmingham, some mutual friends urged him to come see me," Hawley related. "We hit it off, and he came by every time he was in the state, thereafter." "We're small people, see, and I don't think they really care about the small people." Councilor Rose Strong said she'll oppose any move to farm out the work. Councilors Philip H. Batastini and C.E. "Red" McDaniel said they would oppose any layoffs.

But while peoples' jobs must be considered, so too must the cost to the taxpayers, Councilor Bobby Peters said. Attempt to 'get even' gets man in hospital An attempt to "get even" with a group of rowdy men in Booker T. Washington apartments left a Columbus man in serious condition early Monday. The jury could get the case today. District Attorney Ken Davis said he expected to conclude the prosecution's case within hours this morning, after the trial resumes at 9 o'clock. Smith said Ms. Lyles told him she gave birth at her home, with little warning, put the tiny babies on a bunk bed, then some five hours later put them into a plastic diaper bag and threw them into the ravine. Community Development Director Dick Ellis was ambivalent, saying that "if the shoe fits, wear it." He said he wasn't offended by the committee failing to be specific. Public Services Director Richard W. McKee, however, said the committee should be more careful not to risk accusing all department heads by implication.

"It's very unfair," he said. "If it's my department they're talking about, I'd like to know about it." Peters said he would not elaborate on the report. But he said department heads who refuse to go along will be disciplined. "If they continue with a total indifference, we feel it should be a factor in determining pay raises," he said.
